Although window blinds last for a very long time – a general estimate of about 7 years – there may come a time when you may have to replace them. Here are the signs that it is time to replace your blinds.
Do your blinds still slide smoothly up and down? If not, and they require effort and help from your side to lower and lift them, the operating mechanisms could be damaged. Hard-to-raise blinds, and additional force to operate them, could cause them to fall from the window.
If any of the slats on your blind are bent or warped, it can cause the blind not to raise and lower correctly. It can also be noticeable, spoiling the aesthetic appearance of the blind. This may be due to incorrect operation of the blind or environmental factors such as excessive moisture. Especially wooden blinds, if not maintained properly, the slats may warp if exposed to too much moisture.
Although modern blind materials offer UV sun protection, exposure to harsh sunlight may cause your blinds to fade. When you shop for blinds always enquire about materials with UV protection.
Blinds may also discolour due to deteriorating materials.
If the cords or the edges of your fabric blinds are frayed, it is a clear indication that it is time for new blinds. Frayed cords may be caused by wear and tear, or damage from failing internal mechanisms.
Old blinds that do not operate properly can be caused by warped/bent slats or mechanical failure. If they do not close properly anymore, they won’t allow you privacy and it may be time for brand-new blinds.
If you have bought your blinds 6 or 7 years ago, you may have changed some of your interior decorating styles, or you are considering it. Your blinds may be out of style and you may want to look at styles with more advanced materials and operating mechanisms. Like automated blinds!
