Wooden blinds for windows are a popular choice because of their durability, excellent light control and stylish appearance. As with any blinds, they do require regular cleaning. However, unlike aluminium, PVC or fabric blinds, wood blinds require more specific cleaning techniques to prevent damaging the wood and the blinds from warping.
Dusting
Wooden blinds should be dusted weekly to prevent dirt and grime from building up. Use a microfiber duster or cloth, or vacuum with a soft upholstery brush.
Start by closing the blinds and wiping each slat from left to right. Rotate the blinds and repeat. Leave a small opening when closing the blinds so dust is not trapped where the slats overlap.
Don’t forget the headrail, dust can accumulate and affect the smooth operation of the blinds.
More thorough cleaning
Wooden blinds need a more thorough cleaning every couple of months, depending on the environment you live in. If there is a build-up of grime, a more thorough cleaning is necessary to help your wooden blinds look as good as new and last longer.
Use a damp soft cloth dipped into warm water with a dash of mild detergent. Wipe each slat carefully. Make sure the blinds are dry after the cleaning process! Moisture is the number one enemy of wood and you do not want lots of moisture to get onto your wooden blinds. Excess moisture can cause wood blinds to swell or warp.
You can also use a mild, good-quality wood cleaner. Do not spray directly on to the blinds, instead, lightly dampen a clean cloth and spray a small amount of cleaner onto the cloth. Gently wipe each slat a few times.
Rotate the blinds and repeat on the other side. Always use gentle movements to prevent damaging the blinds.
Wooden blinds in kitchens are especially prone to grease build-up and may require more regular cleaning.
